Aate Ka Laddu Recipe

Laddu from wheat flour!? This was the expression when I had this Laddu for the first time at a friend's place. How can anybody prepare laddus from the same flour we use for making chapatis? The taste was so good that I could not afford to delay in collecting the recipe and trying it at home. Here is my simplified version of aate ka laddu or wheat flour ladoos.

Ingredients :
Wheat flour - 2 cups
Ground Sugar - 2 cups
Ghee - 1 cup
Cardamom powder - 1/2 tbsp
Dry fruits

Procedure :
1. Heat ghee in a thick bottom pan. Add the flour, mix well
2. Keep stirring continuously on low flame until the color of the flour changes to brown and nice aroma comes (keep adding a spoon of ghee if the flour dries out.)
3. Once the color changes, switch off the heat.
4. Allow the mixture to cool a bit. When it becomes warm, mix ground sugar, cardamom powder and dry fruits.
5. Mix well and take some quantity in hand and form into laddus.
6. If the laddus are not forming into shape and breaking off, you can add ghee to the mixture and try.
7. Cool them completely before storing in airtight container.

Party Games for Kids

How can we forget kids in any parties. I am sure everybody will agree with me that, kids become highly excited and energetic and become uncontrollable in parties. Controlling them becomes a herculean task for the parents as well as the organizers of the party.

Best way to tame them is to keep them engaged somehow. What more better way than engaging them in some kind of interesting games? They will listen to you obediently and enjoy their time too.

Here are some interesting games for the kiddos in the party. Divide the kids into two groups if age groups differ a lot.

1. Musical Chair : It is one of the most successful and a favorite game for the kids. Place rows of chairs back to back or in a circle.Place one chair less than the number of kids. Keep removing one chair every time a player is out.
2. Musical Statues : Another fun game. Play some music and ask them to dance. When the music stops they should freeze. It will be real fun to see their poses in statue mode.
3Pass the Parcel : Make them site in a circle. Hand over a ball or a parcel. They should keep passing it to the next kid till the music stops. The kid with the ball in hand when the music stops is out.
4. Balloon Pop : Kids who can blow maximum number of balloons in a limited time is the winner
5. Letter to Word : One of children's favorite. Form a circle. Give a letter to the first kid and ask him to form  a word from it. (Ex: B - BALL, L - LONG, G - GYM, M - MOTHER..........) The next kid has to form a word from the last letter of the word and it continues.
6. Shadow Bluff : It needs a little preparation. If anybody is an expert in creating shadow creatures using hand, he can keep the children busy showing his talent and kids enjoy guessing the creature. You can later teach some of them too.
7. Dart game : Supervise carefully. Tell the kids to stand in long line. Give them one chance per turn(kids won't mind;rather they will be eager to join back the line at the end). You will be amazed to see their concentration and target hitting
8. Hit the Target : A variation of the above game. A ball is used here. Keep some attractive target at a distance and let them hit the target.

Have you tried these games with kids? Would you like to add any more games to the list?

Recycled Art - A Vase from old Calendar

It's been long since I made any recycled craft project. Found an old calendar last week while searching for some stuffs. And my hands started itching. Itching to convert that trash into some useful stuff. In the meanwhile I had collected some lovely peacock feathers.
So thought of making a vase for these feathers. Aren't these feathers beautiful?

Follow these easy steps for this DIY project
Materials Required:
Calendar sheets
Glue
Used water bottle (or any container in round shape)
Used CD

Step 1 : Cut the calendar sheet into half (if the sheet is very thin)or three or four equal pieces depending on the thickness and size of the sheet.

Step 2: Roll them and apply glue. They will become hard rolls like these

Step 3: Take an used water bottle or any container and cover it with a sheet. Give a hard base to it. I have used an old CD here.

Step 4: Start sticking the rolls one after the other applying sufficient glue lengthwise and also to the base. Applying glue on the adjacent roll to hold it tight.

Step 5: Finish the entire circumference with rolls. If you wish you can paint them with the color of your choice. Else keep it as it is to give a natural look.

A beautiful Vase is ready!

A Special Independence Day!

Yesterday I got an opportunity to witness the Independence Day celebrations and be a part of cultural activities at a school function.
As the flag was hoisted and the National Anthem was sung, I realized, it has been so many years since I attended any Flag hoisting ceremonies. A sense of pride set in as I sang the National Anthem looking at the fluttering National Flag .

Once I was out of school, it was as if the celebration of National Festivals was over. We used to hoist the Flag on the terrace of our house for couple of years after out from school. With great difficulty, few times I have even visited the Manek Shaw Parade ground in Bangalore to witness the Flag Hoisting and catch a glimpse of the parade. But yesterday was something different, something special. Proud to be an Indian!

Happy Independence Day!

London Olympics - India's Medals and Disappointments

The biggest sporting event, London Olympics 2012 has ended. All the players have returned to their respective nations, some with medals, some with records, some with controversies and others empty handed. As far as India is concerned, it was country's best performance,  83-member strong Indian Contingent returned with 6 medals, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze. Though there is an increase in the medal count, some players with high expectations have only succeeded in disappointing us.

The medal winners at the London Olympics are
1. Bronze - Gagan Narang - Shooting
2. Bronze - Saina Nehwal - Badminton
3. Silver - Vijay Kumar - Shooting
4. Bronze - Mary Kom - Boxing
5. Bronze - Yogeshwar Dutt - Wrestling - 60kg
6. Silver - Sushill Kumar - Wrestling - 66kg

And here are some of the players who failed to live upto the country's expectations.
Vijender Singh, a big medal prospect, came close but couldn't succeed. Deepika Kumari and the archery team made a quite exit after a poor performance. Abhinav Bindra, the Beijing Olympics Gold medal winner couldn't put up a performance worth qualifying for the finals. The selection of the teams created more news than the performance for the tennis team which got crashed out. The worst play was put up by the Hockey team, without winning a single game.

London Olympics - Final Medal Tally

What a great weekend for India at the Olympics. First it was Yogeshwar, then it was Sushil Kumar. First it was a Bronze, then it was a Silver!. The spectacular 16 days of sporting action have ended with an extravagant closing ceremony.

India's performance has been a good one, an improved one from the last Beijing's Olympic, (not to miss the major disappointments). The number of Medals have also doubled to 6 this time. The last 3 medals for India -Mary Kom won a Bronze medal for Boxing, Yogeshwar Dutt won a Bronze in wrestling and Sushil Kumar earned the last medal for India, a Silver in wrestling.

The final top 10 positions in the Medal Tally at the end of Day 16, the 12th of August are as follows. India stood at 55th position with 6 Medals-2 Silver and 4 Bronze.
