My all time favorite comedy classics

While watching movie 'Angoor' on TV yesterday, i remembered my other favorite comedy classics. Here they are, not in the order of preference as each one is unique in its own way

1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) :

Hillarious comedy.
The ultimate comic scene in the movie for me is the Mahabharat scene on stage. Just cant stop yourself from laughing aloud. The single line dialogues of Dharmaraj's "....Shaant gadhadhhari Bheem...shaant...."
Dhritarashtra's "...Ye sab kya ho raha hai Dhuryodhan..." are so funny.

I will not write more. Watch it here and enjoy!
Haven't watched this movie yet? Don't worry. Its right here

2. Angoor (1982) :

Based on Shakespeare's "A Comedy of Errors" , this story is of identical twins( 2 pairs) and mistaken identity.
Brilliant performances by all especially Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma. Not to forget Maushmi Chatterjee's innocent and Deepti Naval's serious acting

3. Chupke Chupke (1975) :

Amitabh and Dharmendra who were seen in serious roles in most of the films until then, came together in Chupke Chupke to create that wonderful magic. Dharmendra plays practical joke with Sharmila's family with a dose of pure Hindi and Urdu.
I liked the names of the characters in the movie.
Dr.Parimal Tripathi, Sulekha, Prof. Sukumar, Vasudha. They have suited so aptly. Jaya Badhuri looks very cute

4. Golmaal (1979) :

Amol Palekar is one such humble actor who hesitates to kill even a mosquito! His switching of roles between sober Ram Prasad and modern Laxman Prasad in this phenomenal comedy Golmaal is just worth watching. One is in mustache and oily hair and a short kurta-pajama, the other one is clean-shaven, with loud clothes and modern. You shouldn't miss the hilarious chase to esacpe from his boss Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dat) with help of a fake mother. A complete entertainer with some good songs

Balu Shahi / Badusha

No meal is said to be concluded without treating the sweet tooth. Here is one such delicious dessert to tickle your taste buds. Balu Shahi or Badusha is mostly served in weddings and big occasions. So i was always under the impression that it can only be prepared by trained cooks (halwai) .

But here i am with this mouthwatering dessert dished out from my kitchen !
Believe me it is very easy to make and the taste takes you back to those sweet memories

Ingredients :

All purpose flour / Maida - 2 Cups
Ghee or butter - 4 to 5 sp
Curd - 3/4 cup
Sugar - 2 cups
Baking powder - 1/4 sp
Cooking soda - a pinch
Oil for frying

Procedure :

1. Take maida in a mixing bowl. Add baking powder and cooking soda. You can even sieve them together to that they get mixed evenly. Add ghee and mix well

2. Now add curd to the mixture. Do not knead into a dough but just mix it. It should be something like this. Do not get tempted and add more ghee or curd to make into a soft dough

3. Let it rest for 20 min. covered. In the meanwhile we will prepare the sugar syrup. Take sugar, add little bit of water and bring it to a one string consistency. Add 1 spoon of lemon juice at the end (this will prevent the sugar syrup from solidifying after cooling )

4. Now take a lemon size dough and make it into a round shape and press it. Make a dent at the center. Let the edges be rough and not a smooth one. What it does is, when we put them into the sugar syrup, the syrup gets absorbed properly. Keep them ready on a tray

5. Now fry them in medium hot oil( not too hot oil, them may break) so that it gets cooked properly inside. Fry until you get nice brown color. They get puffed up. If the dough is perfect, they become double in size after frying

6. Now its time to put them into the sugar syrup

7. Take them out once the sugar syrup is absorbed nicely. Mouthwatering Badusha is ready!!

Theme Party - Mirch Masala

Is it time for your next theme Party? Here is an interesting theme, Mirch Masala or Garam Masala. Am sure you are going to love this theme. Let us see how this works.

Decoration : Decorate the room with the cut outs of spices. Place a plate full of different spices arranged creatively on the tables. Place pounding devices, stone mortar and pestle if you have at home. You can even place some decoratives of spices.

Dress Code : If you are the organizer, instruct clearly in advance the dress code ,the jewelry and the accessories which should be of spices. I have shown few examples of necklaces from spices here.

Checkout the making of one such clove necklace at the below link.

Games:
Now the most interesting part of this party, the games.
Obviously the games will be based on the theme of spices. I have suggested few games. There is no bound for your creativity.

1. Make a pouch containing all spices(2 cinnamon sticks, few cloves, nutmegs, few cardamoms, peppercorns, mace etc). Tell the participant to feel and identify the spices after blindfolding her. You can raise the difficulty level by asking the count of each spice!
2. You can make a crossword of the names of the spices
3. You can give the list of scrambled words like

VECOL -CLOVE
EERPPP - PEPPER
KGUFNEERE - FENUGREEK
MCAOR - CAROM
FTDSAIAOEA - ASAFOETIDA
RADMACOM - CARDAMOM
YAF LEBA - BAY LEAF

4. You can dance on some Garam masala song
5. You can ask two participants to pound the peppercorns into fine powder in a pestle in 1 min
6. Ask them to make a jewelry out of spices and paste it on a sheet of paper in 2 min
7. Give any product- Pav Bhaji masal, Chana masala, Chat masala or any spice or your choice and ask them to enact an advertisement to sell that product
8. And the funniest game, ask them to identify these songs- The English translation of Bollywood songs!! (You try without looking at the answers ;)

a. Love is chily, my Love ; complicated are the lanes of Love
b. I was passing by, I was eating bhelpuri, what shall i do if you get chilly
c. Chandu's uncle made Chandu's aunty to have spicy batter with silver spoon
